Quote of the day!!

"Age wrinkles the body.Quitting wrinkles the soul."

I'd rather be...

I’d rather be a could-be if I cannot be an are,
Because a could be is a maybe who is reaching for a star.
I’d rather be a has-been than a might-have-been, by far,
For a might-have-been has never been, but a has was once an are.

~ Milton Berle

Sunday 7 July 2013

Sunday, what's going on? Bit.... Brit!!

So Andy Murray v Novak Djokovic is the Mens Singles Final at Wimbledon, not really my bag but I won't criticise you for watching and supporting whichever sportsman. #1 and 2 in the rankings and at the top of their game. But as I have just ranted on Facebook, please support or not support both of these guys for all the right reasons...
Just a mini Sunday rant!! Like it or not the laws of global citizenship are made much higher than the likes of me and where I might like to put English on my passport, I have to put British! So with the likes of Andy Murray he too has to put British on his passport. So whether you support him is up to you but don't support him or not support him because he's Scottish - he isn't!! He is British.
Novak Djokovic's parents were proud to be Yugoslavian and he is proud to be Serbian a huge lot has happened in his part of the world .... go compare!!
So may he be successful and as a Brit I wish him every success...... I won't be watching him from the very start because of the F1 on Sky and not only is that where my sports passion lies but it is on the verge of yet another rant about the BBC and I promise to only ever rant once on a Sunday!!

July 4th suitable!!

An American Tale

So anyone that knows me will undoubtedly know that the perfect present for an Americophile, such as myself, would be a scratch off map of where you've been in the USA.

I guess then that no one knows me better than my son because guess what? He found the very thing!!

Here ^ ^ it is pictured pristine and fresh out of its tube on Father's Day.

It is no accident that I am posting this on July 4th is it?

Clever I thought!! Independence Day and "Lo and behold" ~ the finished scratched off map of the USA!!

As correctly pointed out by the purchaser of said map, it is not really finished until I have visited all 50 states is it?

So here it is : 28 states visited plus DC and although the map doesn't reflect this Mexico and 4 provinces of Canada as well!

"Not bad for a Brit hey?"

Here's another thing though and again fittingly enough on America's Birthday, 25 of the states plus DC, 3 provinces of Canada and Mexico were all done in one trip! Almost entirely by Greyhound Bus!!

According to Greyhound a journey of 10,578 miles, which is really quite interesting and I can only assume that Greyhound cut the odd corner or two because Rand McNally make the same journey 10,693 miles.

Just a postscript on the actual map. It may be a good idea to market a little tiny vacuum to take away the result of the scratchings!
Incidentally do you ever feel sorry for Alaska and Hawaii? If Alaska had not been rescaled the whole map would have been a lot larger and as for Hawaii f it was the same scale as the rest it would have been less than the size of a postage stamp!!

Of course I will update you should any need for further scratchings take place!!

So so true!!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL BORN IN 1930's, 1940's, 50's, 60's, 70's and Early 80's !!!
First, you survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a tin, and didn't get tested for diabetes. Then after that trauma, your baby cots were covered with bright colored lead-based paints. You had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when you rode your bikes, you had no helmets, not to mention, the risks you took hitchhiking .. As children, you would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags. Riding in the back of a van - loose - was always great fun. You drank water from the garden hosepipe and NOT from a bottle. You shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this. You ate cakes, white bread and real butter and drank pop with sugar in it, but you weren't overweight because...... YOU WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!! You would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach you all day. And you were OK. You would spend hours building your go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out you forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, you learned to solve the problem . You did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no mobile phones, no text messaging, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........YOU HAD FRIENDS and you went outside and found them! You fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents you played with worms(well most boys did) and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever. You made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although you were told it would happen, you did not poke out any eyes. You rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them! Local teams had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! The idea of a parent bailing you out if you broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law! This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever! The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. You had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and you learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL! And YOU are one of them! CONGRATULATIONS! You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good. And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.
